The York Mystery Plays are rooted in York’s medieval past. Between 1377 and 1569, 48 plays presented by the Guilds of the City on wagons were performed on the streets of York. This is the only vocal music to have survived, from Play 45, The Assumption of the Virgin, dating from about 1450. The Assumption is the ascension of Mary, mother of Jesus, to heaven; while not found within the Bible, this apocraphal narrative was popular during the Middle Ages. The texts are selected from the sensuous Song of Songs.
